Barns can have a unique blend of smells. Old, sun-baked wood. Dry dust. The tang of leather, the scent of sawdust. The crackly, sweet smell of the hay, stacked high.
No matter how carefully baled, there's always a drift of loose hay, making a soft bed. So inviting, it calls for three young fillies to settle down in the warm afternoon, breathing in the grassy memories of last summer. Sleep comes soon after.
